This adorable trivet is inspired by beautiful zinnia flowers, my favorite flowers. They bring the feeling of summer—sunshine, color, and blooming gardens…

It’s textured, elegant, and perfect for gifts or home decor. The design features a front decorative panel and a solid back panel, joined together for thickness and durability.

Materials

• Yarn:Knit Picks Dishie, worsted weight, 100% cotton, 190 yards (173meters) 100grams;

For Back panel: color Hickory (you may match the front and back panel colors as well)

Golden Zinnia front panel: color A “Sunny day”, color B “Clementine” Raspberry Zinnia front panel: color A “Blush”, color B “Begonia”

• Crochethook: 5 mm
• Scissors

Approx. 10 in (26 cm) diameter

Not critical for this project, but size may vary depending on yarn and hook.

Use Color A for Rounds 1–2 to create the flower disk effect. Then switch to Color B for subsequent rounds.

Round 1: Make a magic ring. 10 sc

Round 2 (PUFF): ch 2, puff st in same st, ch 1, puff st in next st repeat around

→ 10 puff sts, with ch 1 between each

Round 3 (POPCORN): ch 2, (popcorn in ch-1 space, ch 2, sl st into top of next puff st, ch 2) repeat around → 10 popcorns

Round 4: ch 4, sc on top of popcorn.

(ch 1, dc in space between popcorns, ch 1, sc in top of popcorn, ) repeat around → 40 sts

Round 5 ch 3, 4dc, ch 1, (5 dc, ch 1) repeat around → 66 sts

Round 6 (POPCORN)

2 sl st in 2nd st to reposition, ch 3, popcorn in same st, ch 3,

(popcorn in next ch-1 space,ch3, popcorn in 3rd st, ch 3) repeat around → 20 popcorns / 80 sts

Round 7

Sl st to reposition in ch space, ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2,

(3 dc, ch 2) repeat around → 100 sts (20 groups of 3 dc)

Round 8

Sl st to the next st, chain 3, dc in the next st. In the first chain space make 3 dc. On every 3-double-crochet group, make 3 dc. In chain spaces, alternate between 3 and 2 dc. End with 2 dc in the last chain space and 1 dc on top of the final stitch → 110sts

 Round 9 (POPCORN)

sl st to the next st to reposition, ch 3, popcorn in the same st.

(ch 4, popcorn in the 4th st, ch 4, popcorn in the 4th st, ch 4, popcorn in the 3rd st.) Repeat around for 30 popcorns.

 

Round 10

sl st in next 2 sts to reposition in ch space, ch 3, 3 dc, ch 1,

(4 dc in ch space, ch 1) repeat around → 30 groups – 150 sts

Round 11 (Final Round)

ch 3, dc in each st around → 150 dc

Using the cream Color A, join yarn at the start of Round 8 in the chain space. Ch 8, sl st into the 3rd dc of the next 3-dc group, ch 2, sl st into the 1st dc of the next 3-dc group. Repeat around to form 10 chain arches. In each arch: 5 dc, ch 1, sl st into the central increase dc from Round 8, ch 1, 5 dc in the same arch. Sl st into the ch-2 space. Repeat for all arches around.

Join the color A yarn at the start of Round 10 in the chain space. Ch 12, sl st into the end of the next 4-dc group, ch 2, sl st to the start of the next 4-dc group. Repeat around. In each 12-ch arch: 6 dc, ch 1, sl st to the trivet’s dc, ch 1, 6 dc in the same arch. Sl st into the ch-2 space. Repeat in all arches.

Important: Begin each round with ch 3. This counts as 1 double crochet (dc) throughout the pattern.

Round 1: Make a magic ring, ch 3 (counts as dc), work 14 dc → 15 dc total

Round 2: ch 3 (counts as dc). 2dc in each stitch (inc in each st) → 30 dc

Round 3:

ch 3, dc in same st (inc), (1 dc, inc) repeat → 45 dc

Round 4:

ch 3, dc in same st (inc), (2 dc, inc) repeat → 60 dc

Round 5:

ch 3, dc in same st (inc), (3 dc, inc) repeat → 75 dc

Round 6:

75 single crochet

Round 7:

ch 3, dc in same st (inc), (4 dc, inc) repeat → 90 dc

Round 8:

ch 3, dc in same st (inc), (5 dc, inc) repeat → 105 dc

Round 9:

105 sc

Round 10:

ch 3, dc in same st (inc), (6 dc, inc) repeat → 120 dc

Do NOT cut yarn. You will join the front and back panels with single crochet (sc) around the edge.

Join the front and back panels by crocheting them together with single

crochet, stitch by stitch. The 150 stitches on the back panel should match the 150 stitches on the front panel. Wherever you prefer, you can add a loop for hanging the trivet. Simply crochet a small chain loop (I made 15 ch) at your chosen spot before finishing off.

To finish your piece, you can block it or steam it with a steamer. Align all layers evenly, gently flatten the piece, and once it’s shaped nicely, your trivet is ready to use!
